Quick answer
Remove the mounting bracket by twisting the alarm, mark the screw holes, drill with a 3/16" (5 mm) bit, insert the anchors and screw the bracket in, attach the alarm and turn clockwise to lock it, then test it. Allow about 15–20 minutes per alarm.
What you need
· Heiman S1-R alarm with the included screws and anchor plugs
· CR123A 3V lithium battery
· 3/16" (5 mm) drill bit and drill
· Pencil, screwdriver
· Optional: stepladder
Before you start
Choose a location using our placement guide: ceiling at least 4" from walls, or wall 4–12" below the ceiling, away from vents, kitchens and humid areas. The manual notes the alarm is designed to be mounted on the ceiling, or on the wall if necessary.
Step 1: Remove the mounting bracket
Hold the mounting bracket and twist the alarm in the direction indicated on the alarm cover (Figure 3 in the manual). The bracket separates from the back.
Step 2: Mark the holes
Hold the bracket at your chosen position and mark the screw holes on the ceiling or wall.
Step 3: Drill and fix the bracket
Drill at the marks with a 3/16" (5 mm) drill bit, insert the anchor plugs, and screw the bracket to the surface using the supplied screws (Figure 4).
Step 4: Attach the alarm
Fit the smoke alarm onto the mounting bracket and turn it clockwise to lock it (Figure 5).
Step 5: Test
Press and hold the Test/Hush button on the cover until the alarm sounds (it may continue for a few seconds after release). During testing you should hear a loud, repeating pattern: 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause. If it does not alarm, check the unit is receiving power and test again; if it still does not, replace it immediately.
Safety tips during testing
· Stand an arm's length away; the horn is loud and exposure at close range may harm hearing.
· Never use an open flame to test the alarm.
Common mistakes
|
Mistake |
Why it matters |
|
Mounting too close to a wall |
Dead air can delay smoke reaching the alarm |
|
Painting over the unit |
Paint can clog sensing openings |
|
Skipping the interconnect test |
A silent unit leaves part of the home uncovered |
|
Installing in a kitchen or bathroom |
Nuisance alarms |
After installing
Pair the alarm with others (see our interconnect setup guide) and test each unit individually. Run a functional test after power-on, after any change to the interconnected group, and after returning from an extended trip.
FAQ
Do I need an electrician? The S1-R is battery powered and screw mounted, so no wiring is involved.
Can I install on a wall? Yes, if needed, 4–12 inches below the ceiling.
What if the drilled hole is oversized? Use the supplied anchor plugs and make sure the bracket sits firmly before locking the alarm.
Pre-installation checks
· Test the alarm before mounting (hold Test/Hush until it sounds) so you know it works.
· Make sure the CR123A battery is installed correctly.
· Decide whether the alarm will join a gateway or a direct group, and pair it either before or after mounting. Pairing on the ground is often easier, but always retest at the final location.
Ceiling vs. wall: which to use
Ceiling mounting is recommended. Use wall mounting when a ceiling position is impractical; keep the unit 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling. In both cases, avoid vents, fans and corners where dead air collects.
Surface tips
· Drywall: use the supplied anchor plugs so screws hold securely.
· Plaster or concrete: a drill bit rated for the material may be needed in addition to the 3/16-inch size noted.
· Wear eye protection when drilling overhead.
After mounting: verification
1. Press and hold Test/Hush; confirm 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps.
2. If interconnected, test each unit and confirm every other alarm sounds.
3. Record the installation date.
4. Mark your calendar for weekly tests and the 10-year replacement.
Troubleshooting installation
The alarm won't lock onto the bracket. Check that the bracket is flat against the surface and turn the alarm clockwise fully.
The alarm doesn't sound on test. Make sure the battery is fresh and seated; test again; if it still fails, replace it.
The interconnect test fails at the new location. Move the unit closer to another paired alarm or relocate the host centrally.
Planning an installation day
If you're installing several alarms, work room by room. Pair first, then mount, then run a whole-house test. Keep a pencil and a small notebook with you to record each alarm's location, install date and battery date. Mark the location on a simple floor plan so that, years later, you or the next owner knows which units are due for replacement.
Safety while installing
Use a stable stepladder, wear eye protection when drilling overhead, and check for hidden wires or pipes before drilling into walls and ceilings. If you are not comfortable working at height, ask a qualified person to help. Keep children and pets away from the work area and tools.
When to call a professional
If you find hidden wiring, have unusual ceiling materials, or need advice on local code requirements for the number and location of alarms, contact a licensed electrician or your local fire department.
